Studio Talk- Fernando L. Lara, PhD

AIA Austin's “Latinos in Architecture Committee” presents “New Architecture for a New World:  Convergences in the American Continent”, by Fernando Lara, PhD. Associate Professor of Architecture and Chair of Brazil Center at UT Latin American Institute.

At The University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Lara teaches seminars on 20th century Latin American architecture and urbanism, a doctoral course on the critique of architectural eurocentrism, as well as studios related to the continent’s current urban challenges.

Mr. Lara is a Brazilian architect with degrees from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the University of Michigan.  The author of several books and hundreds of articles, in academic and professional journals as well as the general media, Prof. Lara writes extensively on a variety of issues regarding the Latin American built environment.

A member of the Brazilian Institute of Architects, and the Brazilian DOCOMOMO, Mr. Lara has also been active in his native country as a critic, researcher and educator.  His current interest in the favelas has turned into opportunities to engage with public policy at the municipal level as well as collaborations with local firms designing public spaces in informal settlements.  In 2005 he founded Studio Toró, a non-profit devoted to the challenges of water conservation and urban flooding in Latin America.

Gearing up for a Great Exhibit

Just days away from “PERSPECTIVASdosmil12”, we are glad to announce this year’s exhibit will showcase the work of many talented architects and designers from around our wonderful State of Texas.  A record number of entries will display innovative designs created by young professionals and seasoned firms from Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth.  Additionally, this year we are very excited to be sharing the floor with winning entries from design exhibits organized by AIA Dallas’s “Latinos in Architecture” and “Women in Architecture”.  Exhibit will be on display during the 73^rd Annual Texas Society of Architects Convention and Design Expo at the Austin Convention Center, October 18-20.  Many thanks to our exhibitors and sponsors for making this event possible and we hope y’all can join us during this great celebration of talent and diversity in design.

Exhibit to Showcase Latino Designers

We are proud to announce "PERSPECTIVASdosmil12”.  This exhibit aims to showcase the work and talent of Latino architectural professionals and designers in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month.  The exhibit will take place during the 2012 Texas Society of Architects Convention and Design Expo at the Austin Convention Center, October 18-20.

2012 Book Drive Underway to Inspire Austin Youth

Please join AIA Austin’s “Latinos in Architecture” for the second annual "From an Architect's Bookshelf"
This book donation drive/library development program will provide Austin area High Schools with books that are essential for the teaching and research of Architecture. Additionally, your books will provide motivation to a young student to stay in school and pursue a college degree education.
Donations can include new or gently used books and recent magazines about architecture, interior design, art and construction.  Book donations are being accepted at the Austin Center for Architecture (801 W 12^th St.) between July 9^th and August 17^th
