Scholarship Awards to UT Summer Academy in Architecture

Joined by friends and family at the Austin Center for Architecture, Latinos in Architecture (LiA) recently awarded scholarships to three talented Austin area students.  In our continued effort to promote our profession amongst young Latinos, the three full-tuition scholarships will assist Franco, Jessied and Sindy attend the “Summer Academy in Architecture” at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture (UTSOA).
The Summer Academy is an intensive introductory course in architecture geared toward people who have little to no background in architecture and who wish to test and refine their interests in the field.  The Academy introduces students to many of the important aspects of architecture and encourages personal exploration through individual studio work, supplemented by supporting activities such as faculty and visiting lectures, a film series, site visits, class reviews, and periodic meetings that emphasize students’ more practical concerns (i.e. application procedures, general admissions policies, and the preparation of a portfolio or resumé).
Funds for all three scholarships were raised through various matching grants, corporate donations and fundraising efforts by our committee members.  We would like to give special thanks to the following people and organizations for their generous contributions: Austin Foundation for Architecture, Solis Constructors, Encotech Engineering, DAVCAR Engineering, Leap Structures, Architecture Plus, PageSoutherlandPage, Negrete & Kolar Architects, Hewlett Packard, Mr. Paul Medrano, AIA, Mrs. Maria Guerra, AIA, Mr. Mario Ferriz, UTSOA “Summer Academy in Architecture” Program and the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Latinos in Architecture is honored to have played a vital role in this endeavor and we look forward to continued growth in the coming years for this great cause.

Studio Talk- Fernando L. Lara, PhD

AIA Austin's “Latinos in Architecture Committee” presents “New Architecture for a New World:  Convergences in the American Continent”, by Fernando Lara, PhD. Associate Professor of Architecture and Chair of Brazil Center at UT Latin American Institute.
At The University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Lara teaches seminars on 20th century Latin American architecture and urbanism, a doctoral course on the critique of architectural eurocentrism, as well as studios related to the continent’s current urban challenges.

Mr. Lara is a Brazilian architect with degrees from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the University of Michigan.  The author of several books and hundreds of articles, in academic and professional journals as well as the general media, Prof. Lara writes extensively on a variety of issues regarding the Latin American built environment.

A member of the Brazilian Institute of Architects, and the Brazilian DOCOMOMO, Mr. Lara has also been active in his native country as a critic, researcher and educator.  His current interest in the favelas has turned into opportunities to engage with public policy at the municipal level as well as collaborations with local firms designing public spaces in informal settlements.  In 2005 he founded Studio Toró, a non-profit devoted to the challenges of water conservation and urban flooding in Latin America.
